Why You Need Motorcycle Insurance, Specifically

guy on motorcycleMotorcycles cost money. Whether you ride daily, or just for leisure, you'll need to protect your investment. You can go a long way towards full security by carrying insurance. Yet, the thing is, you need specific motorcycle insurance for that bike. That means selecting a policy that's tailored to your needs. What can you do to get the appropriate motorcycle coverage?

Your motorcycle insurance agent is here to guide you through the motorcycle coverage enrollment process. We can help determine precisely the right policy for you.

Targeting Coverage to Your Motorcycle

Once you buy a motorcycle, it needs insurance. Your state will likely require you to carry coverage, after all. However, getting a policy doesn't mean just attaching your bike to your auto insurance. Regardless of whether you have car insurance, you generally cannot add a bike to the auto policy. These policies will not hold adequate coverage for the bike's unique operating risks.

Rather, you'll need a separate motorcycle policy. The policy's wording, exclusions and limits will address that vehicle uniquely. The good news is that if you have more than one motorcycle, you can often buy multi-bike insurance. That way, you'll have the option insure all the vehicles on one policy. That could lead to cost savings.

The Coverage Within Your Policy

Motorcycle insurance has various shapes and structures. You'll likely be able to add some or all the following coverage to your plan.
  • Liability Insurance: Most states require you to carry this coverage. Therefore, it will generally come on your policy automatically. This coverage helps you repay other parties if you cause a wreck that injures them or damages their property. Keep in mind, you'll likely need more than only the basic coverage mandated by the state.
  • Collision insurance: If you wreck your bike, let this coverage help you pay for some or all repairs.
  • Comprehensive coverage: More than wrecks can damage bikes. For example, one might catch fire, get stolen or get crushed by a falling limb. This coverage can help pay for damage not related to an accident.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP): Following injuries to you or your passengers, this coverage can help you cover medical and other assistive costs.
  • Underinsured/uninsured coverage: You might become the victim of an accident caused by someone else. If they lack the appropriate liability insurance to help you, this coverage can help cover your own losses.
All policies will limit how much they will pay. They'll also usually exclude certain damage from coverage. In that vein, you'll likely face residual costs in addition to your policy premium. That's where we can help. We can guide you through the process of selecting a policy that fits your bike closely. Call us 1-800-503-0590 to learn more!
