Motorcycle Insurance Information
Top-rated Policies for North Texas Drivers, including: Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Garland, Irving, River Oaks & Haltom City
If riding your motorcycle in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, you’ll encounter lots of traffic. However, just beyond, you’ll find miles of open Texas highway.
Biking is a great American past-time. Yet, owning and riding a motorcycle comes with its operating risks. To protect your investment in the bike, you’ll need motorcycle insurance. Let Altima Auto Insurance help you determine the correct coverage.
What is Motorcycle Coverage?
Regardless of where you ride, you’ll face the risk of accidents, motorcycle theft and other bike mishaps. Such losses could prove costly, and you don’t want to lose money trying to pick up the pieces. Your motorcycle insurance can help you receive financial help for these unexpected losses. You’ll be able to better weather challenges you cannot expect.
Keep in mind, motorcycle insurance is not the same as car insurance. Your bike has a unique value, and unique operating risks. You therefore must have a specific motorcycle policy. You cannot add your bike to your car insurance policy.
What Coverage do Texas Drivers need?
Coverage within a motorcycle policy will come tailored to both the bike and your personal security. Most policies can include:
Liability Insurance: Texas requires all drivers to carry this coverage. It insures damage you might cause others if you are at-fault in a wreck. With coverage, your policy can help them pay for their losses. You must carry at least:
- $30,000 bodily injury coverage per person
- $60,000 bodily injury coverage per accident
- $25,000 property damage coverage per accident
*Please note: The state liability rule usually is not enough coverage for most drivers. We recommend you carry liability limits above $100,000 for each requirement.
Collision Insurance: Covers damage to your own vehicle after a wreck. You will likely have to pay a deductible before your policy will cover the rest of the damage costs.
Comprehensive Insurance: Pays for damage from non-accident mishaps, like weather damage. Deductibles might apply here also.
Total Loss Coverage: This coverage works with your comprehensive and collision coverage. Your insurer will agree to pay you the full retail price of your bike in case you total the vehicle. Deductibles might apply, however.
Cash value insurance: This coverage also applies to a totaled vehicle. However, this coverage will only pay you the depreciated value of the bike at the time of the wreck. So, you might not receive payment for the full cost of a new bike. Talk to one of our agents to determine if this is the best fit for you.
Gap Insurance: If you have a loan on the bike, the cash value payout you receive might not equal the cost of the loan. Without gap coverage, you might have a totaled bike, but still must pay the remaining loan cost. With gap coverage, you can often fill in this hole and discard the loan.
Medical Coverage: Following injuries, coverage pays for your medical bills and those of your passengers.
Equipment Insurance: When you add enhancements to your bike, its value might increase. This coverage can help you replace or repair these items in case of losses.
Uninsured/underinsured Insurance: Coverage insures you against damage caused by a third party (like another driver) who doesn’t have appropriate liability coverage.
We can also incorporate other convenient elements into your policy. You might be able to get roadside assistance, trip interruptions protection and towing coverage.
A Note on Insuring Motorized Scooters
Motorbikes come in many shapes and forms, from mopeds, to ATVs to motocross bikes. Often, motorcycle insurance can extend to these vehicles. Ask one of our agents if you can add all your bikes to the same policy. Make sure you get enough coverage for the value of the most expensive vehicle.
